Interiority at the Hyde Park Art Center

Yesterday we went to the opening of Interiority at the Hyde Park Art Center located on Chicago's south side. The reception was quite nice with many familiar faces in the show. Some of Chicago's most renowned artists such as Kerry James Marshal, Nick Cave, and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle were paired with a crop of some of the city's most interesting emerging artists such as Amy Mayfield, Justin Cooper, and Sumakshi Singh. The curatorial insight of pairing young and established artists as part of one local scene was provided courtesy of the well known independent curator Stuart Keeler and the Contemporary Arts Council. It was wonderful to see Sumakshi, Justin, and Amy hung next to such art world all-stars like Kerry James Marshal and SAIC's own Nick Cave. I recommend that you see this show as it is a really fresh survey of the Chicago art scene.

The full list of artists is as follows:

Benjamin Bellas
Amanda Browder
Nick Cave
Justin Cooper
Carol Jackson
Beth Lipman
Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle
Kerry James Marshall
Amy Mayfield
Michael Rakowitz
Sumakshi Singh
LaShawnda Crowe Storm.

Justin Cooper also did a performance which involved several people scotch taping prickly spiny cacti to their heads as they teetered near a large weather balloon hanging from the gallery space.

Below are the images from yesterday's show and performance.
