Mustache

On the same evening of Jacques goodbye dinner we were also invited to a show located in the East Pilsen area of Chicago at the Mustache Gallery.

"The Mustache Gallery is an art show/party that occurs about every two months in the Pilsen art district on Halsted. It is run by two Columbia College students, Pete Skvara and Don O'Brien, who plan the shows, pick the artists and provide the space. It began last summer as a way to showcase talent in an atmosphere that would bring people out." -http://cms.colum.edu/reservoir/people/welcome_to_the_mustache_galler.phpQ

The show was entitled "A Fashion Show" with work by several local designers. The first show was at 8:30 and the second was at 10:30 with garments made by innovative designers in the city.

The designers included were as follows:
Chase Bracamontes
Genevieve Clifford
Inventors Clothiers
Tommy Gardner
Kelly Kroener
Martin Morse
Summer Romero

The gallery also requested that some local artists come in to install their work for the show. The whole place was blooming with Art, Fashion and Energy that night. Once the fashion show was over people filled the loft-style gallery with dancing on the runway and smiles on the faces. It was a fun-filled night with an after party that carried on till 3am.

Congratulations/Happy Birthday/Farewell Jacques

On Saturday night we gathered at the home of Miss Maude Standish in celebration of her beloved, Jacques Vidal, and his departure to Yale University School of Art. Jacques will begin the grad program this coming fall and we are all excited. Both he and Maude have celebrated their wonderful achievements this year with Maude's acceptance into Northwestern University located here in Illinois and Jacques upcoming years at Yale. Both their achievements are not only admirable but extremely inspirational to many of us who have either just graduated, or are on our way to graduating this coming year. Congratulations Jacques and Maude!!!

Seattle

I recently returned from a one week visit to Seattle. Ever since moving so far away from my home in Honolulu, Hawaii I very rarely get to visit. Aside from taking a 9 hour plane ride across the West Coast (not to mention the Pacific Ocean as well) I also need the ridiculous amount of money to pay for a roundtrip ticket to paradise! What does home have to do with Seattle you ask? A part of home flew to ME this time or rather we flew to each other and met half way!

My Mom was scheduled to attend two business meetings in Seattle last week so I decided to join her. Leaving Chicago's 90 degree summer day and arriving in Seattle's 60 degree day was refreshing I must say. The city greeted us kindly with it's beautiful coastal views which can be appreciated from almost anywhere you stand downtown. I had been to Seattle before as a young girl and we did just about everything you could do in the city. Those familiar landmarks were still there, of course my favorite of all which will never move is the sight of Mt. Rainier.

I will admit we did some tourist things such as visiting Pike's Market and the Seattle Center. But everything was very exciting and pleasant. At Pike's Market one can get lost in the herds of people all enjoying the fresh smell of the world's finest seafood as well as getting splashed by fish being thrown up in the air! We listened to a very talented group of street performers just in front of the world's very first Starbucks Cafe, and of course people we drooling over the site of that. I was most impressed by the architecture of the Science Fiction Museum & the Experience Music Project Museum designed by Frank Gehry. Everywhere I went I couldn't help but notice the Chicago equivalent of the things I would see. I compared Millenium Park and Navy Pier to the Seattle Center, Chicago's Frank Gehry to their Frank Gehry, the Sears Tower to the Space Needle, the observations could go on and on...

Aside from rampaging through the city with my mom those first few days we finally checked out of our downtown hotel and into the home of a close family friend whom we all call "Uncle Delbert". My mom first met Uncle Delbert back in the 80's (pre-me) when she was working on fishing boats traveling from Seattle to Alaska. He generously turned his home into a boarding house for people such as students. Uncle Delbert's generosity to my family has been endless. Our time with Uncle Delbert was fun, waking up to waffles at 8 am, watching baseball every evening, dinner at 5 pm, and off to bed at 9 pm.

Much of the latter part of our trip was spent relaxing and listening to stories from looong ago. Uncle Delbert taught us how to make fresh fruit jam, how to prepare the canning of fruit as well as how to make the best dill pickles. So life in Seattle was pretty relaxing. One evening we dined at one of Seattle's most renowned restaurants, Ivar's. We faced Lake Union and enjoyed a delightful meal.

Our final day in Seattle was beautiful because the sun had finally peeked out from behind the gray sky and we just lingered around the house and said our final goodbyes. My mom and I both flew out at the same time which was nice for us to finally spend those last hours together. I have been missing Hawaii significantly and it was so great to have seen my Mom.

An Evening with Dan and Matthew

Last night we were once again invited to the lovely home of Dr. Daniel Berger and Matthew Piechowski. Everyone had a wonderful time chatting and enjoying the delicious barbecued food that they had prepared.

It was a night filled with laughter for all of us as one of the guests Mr. Paul Sanasardo shared some of the best stories from his childhood. Mr. Sanasardo is universally recognized as one of the leading teachers and exponents of modern dance and shared his wisdom with us all that night.

Of course the night could not continue without the appreciation of Dan's fine collection of work. The collection never fails to amaze me as I discover more and more surprises throughout Dan's home.

The night concluded at around one in the morning we all needed to get a good night's rest. Thank you Dan and Matty!

Morton Arboretum

Upon my return to Chicago, Esteban and I planned many outings for ourselves. One day we visited the Morton Arboretum on the rolling Valparaiso moraine and bisected by the East Branch of the DuPage River of Illinois. We spent much of our time walking through the "woodsy woods" and we saw many different species of trees from Elm trees to Shrubs from China!

"The Morton Arboretum is an internationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to the planting and conservation of trees. The Morton Arboretum's living collections represent one of the most comprehensive collections of woody plants in North America. Throughout the Arboretum's history, it has acquired plants from more than 40 countries in the northern temperate zone of the world. The collections today include 4,050 different kinds of plants, represented by more than 182,000 individuals arranged according to five groups: taxonomic collections, geographic collections, special habitats, horticultural collections, and collections of rare and endangered plants."

4th of July- chicago

I returned to Chicago today and it is Independence Day, my flight was long and I got very little sleep. However, I did find time to enjoy myself on this 4th of July. A few blocks down my street my very good friend Elizabeth Weiss opened her home to everyone to celebrate the holiday. It was fun! fun! fun! I am exhausted and must get rest, but decided to blog about this great time...I'm glad to be back in Chicago!

One Last Stay in Amsterdam

My class was over on June 30th, but I had extended my stay in Amsterdam until the Fourth of July to see more of the city as well as spend time with my new friends there. I soon checked out of the hotel and into a local hostel.

The night before I was invited to go on a road trip with Astrid Honold, Fendry Ekel, Folkert de Jong and Delphine Courtillot to an art opening in Belgium. The opening would take place on Sunday, July 1, 2007 at 11:00 am, and they planned on taking the three hour drive out to Belgium early that morning. I decided to join them; excited and eager to see a new country, a new museum, spend time with some of my favorite artists and newest friends on a car ride which would bring up the most interesting and fun conversations.

I got a good nights rest and met Astrid, Fendry, Folkert, and Delphine bright and early at 7:45 the next morning. Our road trip had begun! We were all a bit weary eyed and yawny, but we hit that road nonetheless. The four of them gave me a little bit of background in regards to the Museum we were visiting. It was an opening at the Museum Dhondt Dhaenens in Deurle, Belgium, which would open a show of one of the most important Belgian private collections, the collection of Roger and Hilda Matthys-Colle, focusing on influental movements from the 60's through the 90's. The Museum Dhondt Dhaenens, will soon be bringing the Chronic Show (the show that was here in Chicago) into their doors on October 7, 2007 featuring new work by Folkert de Jong, Fendry Ekel and Dylan Graham.

We had some peculiar conversations ranging from Art to Conspiracy Theories. The ride was filled with fun, we had our GPS lady-friend speaking to us and guiding us along the way...haha...in hopes that we would not get lost. When we finally arrived to the small town of Deurle, the Museum was a bit hard to find, our GPS said it was one way while we all believed it was the other! Surrounded by absolute greenery, the museum stood in the center of a small town with beautiful fluorishing trees all around, it was no wonder we had such a hard time locating it. Once we arrived, they introduced me to Joost Declercq, director, as well as Tanguy Eeckhout, the managing curator of the Museum, both men were very charming and had lots to say about the exhibition that was currently on display. I took a look at the collection only to find several treasures of which included a painting from Warhol's "Electric Chair" series, a small lamp and chair wrapped in plastic from the beginning of Christo's "wrapped objects", one of Mike Kelley's first stuffed animals entitled "Turtle Girl", quite a number of Sol Le Witt sculptures, and many more pieces that are important to the legacy of such artists of that caliber.

After looking through the Museum we headed over to a nearby gallery to see the work of an artist who also attended the Rijks Academy several years back. We then lingered in the front lawn of the museum and enjoyed the bright sun that shone through the sky.

After an afternoon of viewing art, a private luncheon was held under a beautifully white tented area just to the side of the museum. The five of us enjoyed a delicious meal and continued with our chatter amongst various art collectors, family members of Roger and Hilda Matthys-Colle, museum directors, and children galore! As the five of us sat down to lunch I shared my stories from the class trip to Documenta and Munster Sculpture Project, we talked at length about art fairs in general. I had tons of questions and they had questions themselves, I was curious to see what life was like in the Netherlands, constantly comparing things to what I had experienced, while they were curious about the school I was attending, my plans for the future, and life as it was growing up on an island like Hawaii. It seemed as if we were a group of many seas...from Germany to Holland to Paris, down to Indonesia and across the ocean to Hawaii, we all had such diverse lives to share stories about. Laughter filled our end of the table as we constantly let our humor unfold in the conversations we shared.

After our visit to the Museum Dhondt Dhaenens we headed back towards Amsterdam. Exhausted and full on food and refreshing wine, Astrid, Delphine and myself fell asleep as the guys soon surprised us. When we awoke we were at the Middelheim Museum in which an exhibition of the work of artist, Paul McCarthy was being shown. As we stepped out of the car, we could see a glimmer of pink in the sky and we would soon find out what it was. The exhibition was entitled PAUL MCCARTHY - AIR BORN - AIR BORNE - AIR PRESSURE and featured five new works of his monumental inflatable sculptures dispersed throughout the statue park.

On the way home from the museum my friends invited me to the beach with them the next day. I had not seen an ocean in over a year and I was excited to join them that next evening.

So we met up at around sunset and took a ride to the coast of Holland. It felt so nice to finally see an ocean especially seeing it from a different worldly perspective. The day had been quite rainy and the wind must have been blowing at least 75 mph! We enjoyed ourselves nonetheless, and conversed over sweet summer Mojitos.

The next day Fendry invited me to take a ride with him to Den Haag in which Den Haag Museum is located. He wanted to look at the paintings of German painter, Daniel Richter, who was said to have had work in a show there. As we walked in the doors of the Museum we were greeted by a sculpture done by Folkert, of a figure staring into the sky wrapped gracefully within a blanket. The collection itself was very interesting, I was most impressed by the vast collection of Mondrian's that they had on display. I got to see Victory Boogie Woogie which is the last, unfinished work, by the Dutch Painter, Piet Mondrian.

On our way out of Den Haag Museum Fendry and I stopped by the next-door building which was housing an exhibition of Japanese artist, Yoshitomo Nara. This was also a favorite of what I had seen that day.

I enjoyed an array of wild and exotic tastes at a local Indonesian Restaurant in Den Haag with Fendry for lunch. We then headed back to Amsterdam for our final farewells as I met up with Delphine and Folkert at their studios. I was blown away by the amount of art that all three of these artists had produced and of what exceptional quality it was.

I flew out to Chicago the very next morning as a sort-of Independence Day gift to all my friends. My stay in Europe was delightful and everything I had experienced made my time an absolute joy.
